Dreamers' Circus

Nikolaj Busk (piano, accordion)
Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (violin)
Ale Carr (cittern, violin)
It all began one late night at the Nørrebro Spillemandsstævne (a folk festival in Copenhagen, red.) in 2009. Ale and Rune were jamming, and next to them stood an unmanned piano. When Nikolaj walked in, he sat down on the vacant piano stool and they played all night.

Six months later, Rune played his début concert to mark the termination of his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Programmed to play Mozart’s 5th Violin Concerto with the Copenhagen Phil, everybody was surprised to see Ale and Nikolaj walk onto the stage to play the cadenza in the third movement. The three of them played a folky interpretation of the concerto and when the orchestra joined them at the end of the cadenza, the crowd went wild. Dreamers’ Circus was born and this was to be their first steps on what would turn out to be a global, musical journey.

In 2010 Dreamers’ Circus published an EP, recorded in Stockholm and produced by the guitarist from Väsen, Roger Tallroth. Both he and the amazing Sofia Karlsson (vocals and tin whistle) appeared on the EP about which Nils Thorlund, music critic at Rootszone, wrote in his review:

”This new, instrumental trio creates beautiful, painful, swinging tunes that catch the ear without being banal. To what may this not lead?” And as it turned out this led to a lot more. The trio played concerts and travelled the world with their music.

In 2011 they were invited to play a string of concerts with the Copenhagen Phil, performing as soloists in front of the orchestra. The concerts were named “60 Minutes of Dreams”, and, as the title indicates, consisted of 60 minutes of music by Dreamers’ Circus. During the course of this project, the trio met rock musician, writer and critic, Kristian Leth; a meeting that would prove important for the further development of Dreamers’ Circus.

Apart from a busy concert schedule as a trio, several collaborations with other artists and ensembles were launched. The constellation “Dreamers’ Circus & The Danish String Quartet” was one of them and has led to many concerts in Denmark and Germany.

Dreamers’ Circus has also collaborated and performed with artists as diverse as Indian bansuri wizard Rishab Prasanna, Danish Chamber Players and The William Blakes.

“Kristian Leth & Dreamers’ Circus” came into being due to a mutual love of and fascination with each other’s music. The group played their first short concert at the SPOT Festival in Aarhus in 2013, but the first full length concert was at the Tønder Festival 2013 where a fifth member joined the quartet thus making it a quintet by the name “Kristian Leth & Dreamers’ Circus feat. Gustaf Ljunggren”.

In June 2013 Dreamers’ Circus published their first full length album, “A Little Symphony”, which contains 60 minutes of music, instrumental acrobatics and groovy guest performances by The Danish String Quartet, The European Travelling Brass Carnival and Rishab Prasanna. This album received a lot of positive attention and put Dreamers’ Circus on the musical map. “World class folk music”, “Equilibristic euphony and acrobatics of the highest order”, “Probably one of the best albums to come out of Denmark for a long time”, were some of the praise the critics showered the three circus boys with.

At the Danish Music Awards Folk 2013, Dreamers’ Circus was nominated as “Talent of the Year”, “Album of the Year”, Ale as “Artist of the Year”, and both Nikolaj and Ale as “Composer of the Year”. The group was awarded with the three first mentioned awards.

In October 2013 Rune, Ale and Nikolaj traveled to Sydney to perform in one of the finest and most iconic concert halls in the world, The Sydney Opera House, where Rune received The Crown Prince Couple’s Rising Star Award. “[...] they were impressed by his precise yet sensitive playing of the violin, superior technology and melodiousness. Few musicians in the classical world have made a greater impact of mixing classical music with Danish folk.”

And what does the future hold? - More concerts, travels, projects and musical encounters, more notes, more music …
